| In September, the Ministry of Health and Welfare and Ministry of Labor reported that in 2001, all the child consultation offices in the country had an increase of 31% in the number of cases of consultation and processing, up to 23,274 cases, setting a new record. |
2001年度に全国の児童相談所が相談・処理を行った児童虐待の件数は前年度から31%増加して、2万3274件に上り、過去最高を更新したことが9月に厚生労働省のまとめで分かりました。

| This investigation was started in 1990, and in 2001 the number of cases sent to the consultation offices across the country had risen to 24,792, but due to some sort of response ended up with the number above. Also, the number of cases reported by the consultation offices when entry into the home was necessary had almost doubled from the previous year to 200 cases. |
この調査は、1990年度に開始されましたが、2001年度に全国の児童相談所に寄せられた虐待相談件数は、2万4792件にのぼり、そのうちの、何らかの対応をした件数が上の数字です。また児童相談所による家庭などへの立ち入り調査件数は、前年度の約2倍の200件に上ったことも発表されました。

| Among the forms of child abuse, the most prevalent form is hitting, kicking, and other forms of physical abuse. At 10,828 cases, physical abuse makes up 46.5% of all cases of child abuse. However, physical abuse has been reduced from 50% at the beginning of the investigation. On the other hand, neglect, currently at 38%, and psychological abuse, currently at 12%, have sharply risen, and sexual abuse accounts for 3% of child abuse. The rise in neglect and psychological abuse is the reason for the drop in physical abuse. |
虐待の種類としてもっとも多かったのは、殴る、けるなどの「身体的虐待」で1万828件で、全体の46.5%を占めました。ただし、身体的虐待は、調査開始以降はじめて5割を割りました。その一方で、保護の怠慢あるいは拒否である「ネグレクト（養育放棄）」が38%、過度になじるなどの「心理的虐待」が12%と、この両者が急増し、続いて「性的虐待」の3%という順になっています。ネグレクトと心理的虐待が急増した影響で、身体的虐待が初めて50%を下回ったわけです。

| By age, elementary school students account for the largest percentage with 36% of all cases, followed by 3 years to just before elementary school age, 0-3 years, and ending with middle school age. While it can be said that an increased understanding of child abuse is also a cause for this, it can still be said that there is a need for society as a whole to deal with child abuse as early as possible. |
年齢別では、小学生が36%ともっとも多く、続いて3歳から学齢前、0-3歳、中学生の順でした。こうした数字は、虐待への理解が広まったことも原因といえますが、社会全体で虐待が少しでも早期の対処されるような心がけが必要といえます。
