1. English Studies Tools Available in Osaka University / 大阪大学で利用できる英語学習ツール

We will introduce English study materials available at the Cybermedia Center and CALL classrooms.

Net Academy	Net Academy
Students, teachers and staff members can use this program from any windows terminal in the University. It is a multimedia English study system which takes place on WWW browsers. Drills such as listening to conversations at various speeds or reading English sentences at various speeds will train students to a level appropriate for the TOEIC exam (300 - 800 point level). Technical English courses (Engineering English level 4, or 3) for science and engineering students are also available.	阪大内のwindows端末から、学生、教師、職員が利用可能!! CALL classrooms located in the education research building in Toyonaka are equipped with digital equipments which can be used outside of regular class hours. You can access TOEFL study materials and BBC New English Course study materials through these machines. Listen to me (one of the study materials available in CALL classrooms)	Listen to me (CALL教室で利用可能な教材のひとつ)
"Listen to me" was developed in order to improve the CALL English lessons. In today's society, it is essential to master English in order to keep up with the globalization of the University education and research. In higher education institutions, one is expected to be able to understand and keep up a professional conversation in English. This study material aims to attain this level of English proficiency. When studying abroad or attending an international congress, accurate listening skills will be required. For this reason, this study material focuses on the listening component. It is aimed for advanced level university students (approximately TOEFL 500 - 520points, TOEIC 600 - 660points) to improve English communication levels. Listen to meは、CALLによる英語教育の高度化をめざして開発したものです。大学における教育・研究の国際化に対応して、英語の習得は必須の時代になっています。特に高等教育の場では、一般的な会話能力だけでなく、学術的なレベルでの理解力や会話能力が求められます。この教材は、こうした大学レベルの英語能力を養成することを目的にしています。海外の大学に留学したり国際的な学会に参加する場合などには、正確なリスニング能力が要求されます。こうしたねらいから、この教材ではリスニングの学習を重点にしています。大学生上級レベル (TOEFL 500 - 520点、TOEIC 600 - 660点程度) の学習者を対象に、英語によるコミュニケーション能力を効果的に養成する目的で作られた教材です。Listen to meのコースの紹介は以下のURL:

2. English Classes Available in Osaka University / 阪大で受講できる英語クラス

Introducing English classes available in Osaka University and unique study opportunities.

阪大の英語の授業やユニークな学習機会を順次紹介していきます。

(1) English for Engineering	(1) 「工学英語」
This course is offered by the Engineering Research department, targeted towards first year master course students. English for Engineering 1 will integrate online study materials and submit assignments online. The focus of the course is to improve English communication skills and strengthen the ability to read, listen and write English for science and engineering. English for Engineering 2 will use CALL classrooms to study composition of science reports in English. Students will also do presentations on their themes of research.	工学研究科の修士課程1年生を主な対象とする授業で、「工学英語I」という科目ではオンライン教材を使いながら、課題をオンライン提出しながら、授業が展開します。英語のコミュニケーション能力の向上とともに、理系の英語についても読む、聴く、書く、という点に特化したトレーニングをおこないます。また、「工学英語II」はCALL教室を使用しながら、英語による科学論文の書き方、各自の研究テーマにそったプレゼンテーションもおこないます。

(2) Summer training program to the U.S. for graduate students in the faculty of science and engineering	(2) 理工系大学院生のための米国夏期研修
A four week program which takes place at the University of California and the University of Washington. Participants will attend concentrated English courses, visit local laboratories, attend special lectures by professors from the Engineering department of the accepting University, visit local companies and laboratories and communicate with local graduate students from the engineering department. By participating in this training program, it is possible to receive credits for the course "English for Engineering 2".	カリフォルニア大学、ワシントン大学での4週間の英語の集中講義を受けるとともに、現地での研究室の訪問、受け入れ大学の工学部の教授による特別講義、地元の企業や研究所の訪問に加え、現地工学部の大学院生との交流も企画されています。この研修に参加することにより、工学研究科の「工学英語II」への単位振り替えが可能です。

(3) "English Cafe"	(3) 「イングリッシュ・カフェ」
Even though there are many international students on campus, there are not many places where both regular students and international students can meet daily. The basic concept of the "English Cafe" is to enable students to expose in English their opinion in a cross-cultural context through international exchange related topics, (also including language aspect). Another important objective is to help the participants to improve their English proficiency. "English Cafe" has been held since Oct. 2006 as the following. The decision about pursuing this project for the next year will depend on how many people will participate this year. So we are expecting many of you to come. ＜Operating information＞ Opening Hours: On weekdays (12:10 to 12:50) on Mondays and Thursdays (during the class period from October to January, and from April to July) Place: "Foreign Student Exchange Information Corner"- 2nd Floor of Student Exchange Building in Toyonaka Campus Content: Regular students and international students exchange in English their opinion on the theme of International Exchange How: Native English speaking instructors changing at every session decide on the theme of the day, and help the students to talk in English, and make sure the debate goes smoothly Applicants: Undergraduate and Graduate students (both regular students and international students can join). Teachers and staff members can also participate. ★The room can accommodate approximately 10 to 13 people. You can drink there a cup of tea or coffee. The participants can enroll by showing their ID as well as writing the information (name, department, etc.).	学内には留学生が多くなっていますが、一般学生と留学生が日常的に交流できる場があまりありません。このため、国際交流的な話題を中心に（ことばの問題も含め）異文化を背景とした学生が英語で意見交換する「イングリッシュ・カフェ」という場を設ける企画が発案されました。この企画は参加学生の英語運用力を養成するということも重要な目標としています。「イングリッシュ・カフェ」は2006年10月より下記の要領で実施されています。この企画は、どれだけの参加者が有効利用するかによって、次年度以降の継続を検討する予定です。ぜひ、多数の方が参加されることを期待しています。＜実施要領＞日時：　平日の昼（12：10－12：50）月・木など（授業期間10月-1月、4月‐7月）場所：　学生交流棟（豊中地区）２Fの「留学交流情報コーナー」。活動内容：　一般学生と留学生が国際交流的なテーマを中心に英語で意見交換します。形態：　英語のネイティヴ・スピーカの教員が輪番で常駐し、当日のテーマを決めて、学生の英語についてのアドヴァイスも与えながら、討議の円滑な進行を図ります。参加者：　学部、大学院生（一般学生＆留学生）、教職員も可。（参加費なし） ★部屋は10－13人ほどのサイズで、お茶、コーヒーが飲めます。利用者は身分証を提示の上、ノートに学部氏名などを記載します。また、看板を掲げ随時広報も行います。

3. English Study Clubs Near Osaka University / 阪大周辺の英語学習サークルなど

We plan on introducing clubs or circles which are useful for English studies from within and outside of Osaka University. Please feel free to use the BBS to recommend other clubs or announce club activities.

阪大内外で活動する英語学習サークルを順次紹介していく予定です。また、掲示板 (BBS) を使って、サークル活動を紹介してください。
