| When the Japanese think of flowers, probably the first thing that comes to mind is sakura. To many Japanese, the coming of spring is marked by the blooming of the sakura blossoms, but unfortunately, by now most of the blossoms have already fallen. According to books, the history of hanami (cherry-blossom viewing) dates back to the Heian period. However, it was not an event for common people until the stabilization of government in the Edo period. |
花といえばサクラ。日本人はサクラの開花で春を感じる人が多いと思いますが、そのサクラもすでにハラハラと散っている。ものの本によると花見(Hanami）の歴史は古く、平安時代にさかのぼり、それが庶民の行事になったのは政情が安定した 江戸時代に入ってからということである。

| When Japanese have a hanami, they gather with friends, family or co-workers, spread a mat under the sakura trees, and enjoy singing and drinking. What kind of impression do international students have of hanami? In Washington D.C., America, sakura trees are planted along the banks of the Potomac river and every year a cherry blossom festival is held, so it may not be such an unusual concept. There are also many people who ignore the blossoms and just drink. The famous sakura-lined walkway at the Osaka mint (122 varieties, 367 trees) is a popular urban sakura-viewing spot nearby, but there are so many people that come to view the blossoms that one has no time to look at the sakura at leisure and must obey the announcements to continue walking forward. |
家族、職場の仲間、友人らとともにサクラの木の下で、ゴザを敷き、飲めや歌えの宴会になるのが一般的な花見の姿で、 初めて日本の花見を見た留学生はどう感じただろうか？ アメリカのワシントン市ポトマック河畔のサクラも有名であり、 「サクラ祭り｣も毎年開催されるようですから、そんなにも珍しくはないかも。サクラそっちのけで飲んでばかりいる人もたくさん います。また近場で、例えばこの時期になると有名な「大阪造幣局の通り抜け（１２２品種、本数367本）」のような都会での 桜見物も、風情があるのですが、実際はゆっくりとサクラを観賞するために留まっている時間も場所もなく、後から来る人に 押されて進まざるを得ないのが実態で「とまらずに進んでください」というアナウンスの連呼が非常に無粋です。
