| Cyclones that develop over the waters of the topics are called “Tropical Cyclones” and those that develop over the northwest Pacific Ocean and have wind speeds over 17m/s in their center (Wind power 8) are called “Typhoons.” Typhoons come and touch down on land in Japan from the end of July to the start of October. In 2004 29 Typhoons developed, and out of those 10 landed in Japan. | 熱帯の海上で発生する低気圧を「熱帯低気圧」と呼び，このうち北西太平洋で発達して中心付近の最大風速がおよそ17m/s（風力８）以上になったものを「台風」と呼びます。台風は毎年７月末から10月初めにかけて日本に接近・上陸します。２００４年には年間２９個台風が発生し、そのうち１０個が日本に上陸しました。 |
| When a Typhoon is approaching there is heavy rain for extended periods of time and there are violent windstorms. The heavy rain causes rivers to overflow and the earth to become loose and cause landslides. Also the windstorm can cause tree branches and signs to go flying. The windstorm can also cut off the electrical wires and cause blackouts. Trains can also be stopped due to flooding or strong winds. Depending on the power of the Typhoon, as it draws close there could be many warnings and alarms. At Osaka University, when Osaka Prefecture calls a “Storm Alarm” classes are cancelled. | 台風が接近する時は、長い時間大雨が降り、暴風が吹き荒れます。大雨によって河川が氾濫したり、地盤の弱いところでは土砂崩れが起きたりします。また、暴風により木の枝や看板が飛ばされることもあります。また、暴風で電線が切れて、停電をおこすこともあります。洪水や強風で電車が止まることもあります。 台風接近時には、台風の勢力や、接近状況に応じて、さまざまな注意報、警報が出されます。大阪大学では、大阪府下に「暴風警報」が出された場合、休講措置をとっています。 |
| If the storm warning is called off before 6 am, then all classes for that day will still be held. If the warning is called off after 6 am but before 9 am then all afternoon classes will still be held. If the storm warning is not called off after 9 pm then all of that days classes are canceled. | Warnings and alarms, as well as various metrological information and
transportation information will be broadcast on the TV or radio. In
a Typhoon, please listen to the information on the TV or radio, and
take the appropriate actions. If you do not have a TV or radio you can
call 177 (Weather Report) on your phone to gain metrological information.
