GCN Osaka Internship / GCN Osakaでのインターンシップ

While I was an exchange student at OsakaUniversity, I also participated in an internship in the office of Professor Shingo Ashizawa of the Foreign Students Advisement Office of the Graduate School of Engineering. I worked on the development of an interactive community website for international students enrolled at OsakaUniversity, called GCN Osaka, short for Global Campus Network (www.gcn-osaka.jp). GCN is website that provides useful information for international students and researchers as well as a means of communication through its multilingual bulletin board.GCN covers important topics such as housing information, employment, health and medicine, financial aid, child care, recycled goods, living in Osaka, and study abroad.International students can turn to GCN Osaka to answer any questions they may have on these content areas.In addition, GCN Osaka has study materials for Japanese learners, delivered in a multimedia format to maximize the potential of online learning.Important events of interest to international students, such as meetings, festivals, fairs, and tours, are also announced on GCN Osaka.Lastly, GCN has a multilingual bulletin board where students can ask questions and share information in their own language. |
私は交換留学生として大阪大学に在籍中、工学部留学生相談部にてインターンシップに参加しました。インターンシップ中の業務は、GCNOsakaという大阪大学に在籍している留学生のための相互コミュニティーサイトの開発です。 GCN Osakaとは留学生や研究者のために役立つ情報提供や多言語掲示板によるコミュニケーションの提供を行っているウェブサイトです。GCN Osakaで提供する情報は、住宅情報、求人情報、保健・医療、奨学金情報、子育て、物品リサイクル、大阪でのくらし、そして留学情報などです。留学生は、GCNOsakaにこれらの内容の範囲でどんな疑問にも答えを求めることができます。加えて、GCN Osaka にはオンライン学習の効率を最大にするマルチメディア フォーマットで送られる、日本語学習者のための日本語学習教材もあります。会議、お祭り、バザーや旅行のような留学生にとって興味深い重要なイベントの情報もGCN Osakaで探すことができます。また、GCNには学生たちが各々の言語で質問をしたり情報を共有できる多言語掲示板があります。

I was an intern on the GCN Osaka staff for a period of six weeks from June to July of 2005.My duties consisted mainly of translating site content from Japanese to English.Because GCN Osaka is a site meant to serve international students, it is vital to provide content in a variety of languages in order for information to be easily accessible.This is the motivation for publishing both English and Japanese translations side-by-side on each page of GCN Osaka.I translated content for pages on emergency and medical information, recipes from around the world, and weekly featured essays offering perspectives based on personal experiences with international exchange |
私は2005年の6月から7月の6週間の間このGCNOsakaのスタッフとしてインターンしていました。私の職務は主に日本語の英訳です。GCNOsakaが留学生の生活を助ける重要なサイトであるためには、情報に簡単にアクセスできるように外国語で内容を提供することが極めて重要です。これがGCNOsakaのどのページにも英語と日本語の両方を並べて情報を掲載する理由です。私は緊急情報や医療情報、世界のレシピ、留学の体験談などのコンテンツを翻訳しました。 |
| Joining the staff of GCN Osaka has been a very meaningful experience for me.First of all, I was able to improve my Japanese language skills while translating texts from Japanese to English.This was my first experience working as a translator, and I learned much about the art of translation.Translating into English also made me appreciate being a native English speaker, because many people work so hard to learn the language. Nonetheless, I was always amazed at how high everyones’ English abilities were and reminded myself that I needed to work harder on my Japanese.I have come to consider it a responsibility to help others with English when needed because being a native speaker of English is somewhat a privilege. | GCNOsakaのスタッフに参加することは私にとって、とても意味のある経験でした。まず、文書を日本語から英語へ翻訳することで、私は自分の日本語の言語スキルを高めることができました。これは私にとって初めての翻訳者としての仕事で、私は翻訳の技術をたくさん学びました。日本では、多くの人が熱心に言語を学んでいます。私は人々の英語力の高さにいつも驚き、私はもっと自分の日本語をがんばる必要があると気づかされました。私は、英語への翻訳をすることで自分が英語のネイティブスピーカーだと認識しました。英語を母国語として話せることは多少なりとも特権ですが、必要なときは、他の人を英語で助ける責任があると考えるようになりました。 |
| I was impressed by the interest taken by many in the promotion of internationalization and sensed their enthusiasm both in their work and their personal lives and through their eagerness to extend help to students.Because of my experience with GCN Osaka, I became more aware of the challenges faced by students studying abroad but was constantly amazed by their resilience in spite of the obstacles.In short, I feel that I have gained a broader perspective of the world.
