| In order for a person owning a foreign drivers license to drive in Japan, that person must possess one of the following licenses. | 外国の運転免許を持っている人が日本で運転するためには、下記の何れかの免許証を所持している必要があります。 |

1) a Japanese drivers license 2) an international drivers license based on the Geneve treaty 3) a drivers license from a foreign country which follows driving standards similar to Japan but currently do not produce international licenses. The Swiss Confederation, the Federal Republic of Germany and the French Republic are the only three admitted at the moment. This license must be attached with a translation prepared by a member designated by ordinance. |

| Members who own a foreign license can apply for a Japanese drivers license of equivalent class, with a part of the exam exempted | 外国の行政庁の免許を受けている方は、その免許で運転することができる自動車等に関する日本の免許を、試験の一部免除により取得する手続を申請することができます。 |

Process: Upon application, if it can be verified that the person possess sufficient knowledge, or driving skills, then a portion of the exam (written exam, technical exam) will be exempted. Substitutes are not allowed so be sure to apply for the license yourself. |
手続: 申請に基づき、運転について必要な知識等又は運転に関する技能を確認し、運転することに支障がないと認められた場合には、免許試験の一部 (学科試験、技能試験) が免除されることとなります。代理による申請は認められていませんので、必ず、ご本人が申請を行って下さい。 |

1) Drivers license application form (available at the examination room) On the application form, there will be questions on medical conditions. They may ask further questions if certain items are applicable to you. |

5) Passport (one which states the date of entry) All passports (old and new) which state entry and exit dates. Documents (such as passport) which prove that the person has stayed in the country for at least three months after obtaining the drivers license in that country. |

7) Alien registration form and a copy Copy of resident's card which states one's legal domicile. If you do not own a resident's card, a copy of the proof of registration. |

8) 1 Photo 3 x 2.4cm Photo must be taken within six months prior to applying, no hat, from the front, no background, above the chest. |
