Celebration of Obi / 帯祝い
| This is a ceremony where an obi is tied to the stomach of a pregnant woman on the day of the dog of the fifth month, to pray for easy child birth. It is to share the good luck of dogs which give birth to many pubs without much pain. This custom stabalizes the position of the child and prevents the child from over-growth. | 妊娠 (にんしん) 5か月めの戌（いぬ）の日に初めて下腹部 (かふくぶ) に帯 (おび ) を巻く儀式 (ぎしき) (慣習) (かんしゅう) です。多産 (たざん) で、お産も軽い犬にあやかって、安産 (あんざん) であるようにと祈願 (きがん) します。この習慣 (しゅうかん) はおなかの子の位置を安定 (あんてい) させ、必要以上に大きくなるのを防ぐ効果もあったようです。 |
| Generally speaking, the Iwata Obi is used for the obi. Formally, a red and white silk obi is used and from the following day, a cotton obi is used. The obi is usually a gift from the woman's family but there are times when it is provided from the Nakoudo (matchmaker) or a couple gifted with many children. Recently, some couples receive it from a shrine well-known for easy delivery prayers. | 帯は、一般に「岩田帯 (いわたおび) 」といって、正式には紅白 (こうはく) の絹地 (きぬじ) を用い、翌日からはふだん用の白木綿 (もめん) の腹帯 (はらおび) に替えました。帯は妊婦 (にんぷ) の実家 (じっか) から贈るのがならわしですが、仲人 (なこうど) や子宝 (こほう) に恵まれている夫婦に贈ってもらうこともあります。今では地域の安産祈願 (あんぜんきがん) で有名な神社から授かることにもなっています。 |
