In Japan there are many different unique customs concerning childbirth. There are things that are different from your country and you may find them surprising. None of these customs need to be followed. If there is a different custom in your own country try and get advice as soon as possible. 日本には、出産にまつわる独特のしゅうかんがあります。みなさんの国にはないこともあって、びっくりするかもしれません。どれも、ぜったいしなければならないことではありません。もし、自分の国のしゅうかんがあれば、はやめに相談しておきましょう。

Maternity Belt 腹帯 (はらたい)
From about the fifth month of pregnancy it is warped around the stomach as a prayer for a safe birth. It is available in many different materials. 妊娠5ヶ月ごろから、安全なお産を願っておなかに巻く布。いろいろな素材のものがある。
Good luck charms for an easy delivery安産 (あんざん) のお守
A good luck charm consisting of a prayer for an easy delivery that is written on a piece of paper and placed into a small pouch. 子どもがぶじ生まれるようにというお祈りを書いた紙がはいった、小さな袋。
The handing over of the umbilical cord臍帯 (さいたい) を渡す
A child's umbilical cord (The cord attached to their bellybutton) is removed and handed over to commemorate the event. When the child marries it is brought over to their new house. 子どもの臍帯 (へそのお) が取れたら、それを記念にわたす。子どもが結婚するときにそれを新しい家に持っていく。
Shrine Visitお宮参り (みやまい)
About one month after birth the child is taken to a shrine to receive prayers so that they can safely grow into an adult. 生まれて1ヶ月くらいで、神社に行き、ぶじに成長することを祈ってもらう。
