"Developing Evaluation Criteria to Assess the Internationalization of Universities", an Osaka University research project conducted over the past two years, was piloted by Professor Norio Furushiro, and it is with great pleasure that we will hold a symposium in order to discuss our research findings and results with both you and a distinguished panel of world-class researchers in the field of higher education.
Based on a comparative analysis of our counterparts' evaluation indices and systems for the internationalization of universities in North America, Europe, and Australia, this project examined possible scenarios for evaluating the internationalization of Japanese universities and makes suggestions for Japanese universities from the study's implications. Considering the different cultural-- and thus divergent semantic interpretations the term internationalization takes in each country, we assembled both domestic and international collaborators in a number of study sessions to develop reasonable and useful assessment tools and indices for the international activities of Japanese universities. In order to examine a set of our prototypical indices, this symposium extends its invitation to, and encourages the contributions of, distinguished researchers from overseas. We welcome all of you who are interested in a critical review and discussion of these research findings and look forward to your active participation.

This research has been funded by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science.

大阪大学を中心に取り組んでいる科研費プロジェクト（「大学国際化の評価指標策定に関する実証的研究」研究代表者：古城紀雄）では、2年間にわたる研究の成果報告をおこなうため、国際シンポジウムを開催します。

本プロジェクトでは、「大学における国際化の進展をどう評価しうるか」という問題意識にたち、北米、欧州および豪州における国際化評価指標の事例を比較研究するとともに、日本の大学で使用可能な指標づくりをすすめてきました。今回の国際シンポジウムでは、研究成果の報告と海外共同研究者を招いてのパネルディスカッションを行います。是非、ご参加いただきますようお願い申し上げます。

本研究は、独立行政法人日本学術振興会の助成（基盤研究（A)(2)：大学国際化の評価指標策定に関する実証的研究）を受けております。
