3. Language Proficiency Tests / 語学等の能力試験

(1) TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)

TOEFL is an exam to determine whether or not you have the necessary amount of English proficiency to take courses at a college level, and is mainly for students who wish to study abroad at a university in countries where the primary language is English. Currently, America, Canada, England, Australia, etc. have more than 2,400 schools, but those who do not speak English natively must provide their TOEFL scores to the school, and is used by various government agencies, scholarship programs, etc.	TOEFLとは、主に英語圏の国へ留学を希望する外国人学生が、大学で授業履修ができるだけの英語力を有しているかどうかを評価する試験です。現在、アメリカ、カナダ、イギリス、オーストラリアなどの大学2,400校以上が、英語を母国語としない入学申請者に対してTOEFLスコアの提出を要求しているのに加え、各種政府機関、奨学金プログラムなどでもこのスコアが利用されています。
The TOEFL exam is usually provided in both PBT (Paper-based) and CBT (Computer-based) formats. For details, the CIEE (Council on Internationsl Educational Exchange) has an official page from the Japanese representative department ( http://www.cieej.or.jp/ ) which can be used for reference. Also, the TOEFL pamphlet can be downloaded from the homepage ( http://www.toefl.org ) of the ETS (Educational Testing Service). Those who have not taken the TOEFL exam before and are feeling uneasy about it should try taking a mock exam (TOEFL-ITP) at their school first. This is conducted several times a year at Osaka University by the co-op, and information about it is available at the exchange student center and each department.	TOEFLを受験したことがなく不安な人は、まず学内で実施されるTOEFL模擬試験（TOEFL-ITP）を受験してみてください。これは大阪大学が大学生協と協力して年数回実施しているもので、留学生課から各部局を通じて募集案内があります。

(2) IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

A test administed by England's british council (http://www.britishcouncil.org/japan.htm) Universities in England, Canada, Australia and New Zealand use this test as a measure of English proficiency. Although this may differ by University, most Universities expect at least score of 6.5 for litterature students and 6.0 for science and engineering students. These exams take place almost every month in Osaka.

英国のブリティッシュカウンシル ( オフィシャルページは http://www.britishcouncil.org/jp/japan.htm ) が中心となって実施しているテストで、イギリス、カナダ、オーストラリア、ニュージーランドなどの大学で、英語力を測る基準として使われています。大学によって異なりますが、概ね、文系で6.5、理系で6.0以上のスコアが要求されます。試験は、大阪地域ではほぼ毎月実施されています。
