3. Linguistic training available for individuals / 個人で申し込む語学研修

Language study abroad is different from studying abroad normally, because university credits are not awarded for studying a language abroad. However, there has been a rise in the number of people who are thinking of studying English in an area where it is the primary language for the following reasons:
* It’s useful for finding a job, so they want to improve their English ability in a short amount of time.
* They want to gather overseas experience so in the future they can study abroad or become an intern.
* Assuming they will study abroad regularly, they want to study English through an organization affiliated with the university.

海外での語学研修では、正規の留学とは異なり、通常は単位認定などを受けられることはありません。しかし、以下のような理由で英語圏での語学研修を考えている方が増えています。
* 就職に有利なので、短期間で英語力をつけたい。
* 海外経験をつんで、将来、留学やインターンを実現したい。
* 正規留学を前提として、大学の付属機関などで英語を勉強したい。

So, what sort of process should you go through to select an area and school for language study? Beyond looking on the internet on your own, selecting a school, and asking questions, it’s also possible for you to apply. In many cases, you can go through co-ops and education abroad intermediaries and be introduced to language schools, extension schools affiliated with a university, etc. Even in this case, it is important to have clearly defined answers to questions like the following ones. Every mediating organization usually provides consultation and explanations of resources free of charge, so please discuss with multiple organizations and select a trusted one.

では、どのようなプロセスで語学研修先の地域や学校を選べばいいでしょうか？自分でインターネットを閲覧して語学学校を選び、問合せのうえ、申し込むことも可能です。多くの場合は生協や留学斡旋機関を通じて、語学学校や大学付属のエクステンション・スクールなどを紹介してもらいます。この場合でも、以下のような選択肢を自分自身で明確にしておく必要があります。どの斡旋機関でも、通常は相談や資料説明は無料でおこなっていますから、複数の機関で相談して信頼のおける機関を選ぶようにしてください。

Even if it’s simply to raise your level of English ability, the selection will change depending on what area the focus will be on. For people who want to study abroad one day, it would be more effective to study a subject they’re interested in at a place with an atmosphere close to that of the university they want to go to. For people who are interested in business and volunteer activities, it would probably be more meaningful for them to study the language at a place where there are opportunities for practical experiences as well.	英語のスキルアップといっても、どの点に重点をおくかで選択肢が変わります。将来、留学したい人にとっては、自分の勉強したい分野や行きたい大学に近い環境で勉強した方が効果的です。ビジネスやボランティア活動に興味がある人には、語学研修以外に実地に学ぶ機会があったほうが有意義な研修になるでしょう。

First, it’s important to begin the selection with the country. You should choose a place that matches your purpose and interest, and is easy for you to adapt to. Depending on the country, accents in English change, so that will probably become one of the criteria of selection. Also, please take safety, ease of obtaining a visa (e.g. due to anti-terrorist measures, obtaining a visa to study abroad in America takes time and work), price of goods, and other living environment concerns into consideration, and then decide on a destination.	まず、国の選定から重要です。将来の目標や自分の興味にあわせて、そして自分が適応しやすい場所を選ぶべきです。国によって英語のアクセントなども異なりますので、国を選ぶ際の基準になると思います。また、安全性、ビザ取得の利便性（例えば、アメリカへの留学ビザ申請はテロ対策のため、手間と時間がかかるようになっています）、物価などの生活環境、なども考慮して、行き先を決めてください。

The cost of living and tuition for each country also differs. Prepare a number of schools as candidates and calculate the length of stay and budget, and select the best one.	国や地域ごとに生活費や授業料なども異なります。いくつかの学校を候補にして、行ける期間と予算を試算したうえ、最も適当な学校を選んでいきましょう。

In the end, whether or not you can use your time and money effectively to achieve your goal is a major point. If you go to an area with many Japanese people, it’s possible that no matter what you do the times you use Japanese will increase. On the other hand, it’s possible a place where there aren’t many people will be lonely and contribute to stress. It’s important to research as much as you possibly can, and then select a place to study that matches you.	最終的には自分の目標達成のために、有効に時間とお金を使えるかどうか、が大きなポイントになります。日本人が多くいる地域にいけば、どうしても日本語を使う機会が増えてしまうかもしれません。かといって、人口が極端に少ない地域で寂しい思いをするとストレスがたまってしまうかもしれません。あくまでも自分で可能なかぎりリサーチをして、自分にあった研修先を選ぶことが重要です。
