More than expected ! 期待以上の結果 !
From September 2002 to August 2003, I studied abroad in the Department of Genome Sciences at the University of Washington in the U.S. by taking advantage of the exchange program between Osaka University and the University of Washington.
 私は、大阪大学工学研究科修士課程2年目の2002年9月から大学間の交換留学制度を利用して、アメリカのシアトルにあるUniversity of WashingtonのDepartment of Genome Sciencesに留学しました。
After I obtained my Bachelor of Science in Bioengineering, I joined the Master program in the Department of Biotechnology at Osaka University. During my Master program, I did research in the field of protein engineering. Although I found this research to be interesting, I became more interested in doing research related to human diseases in the future and wanted to work for a pharmaceutical company after getting my Master degree. Through courses and research during my bachelor and Master programs, however, I did not obtain much knowledge and experimental skills essential for conducting research in the area of medical sciences. Therefore, I was looking for an opportunity to learn about them during the rest of my Master program. At the same time, I found about the exchange program between Osaka University and several universities in the world. I heard that one of the universities, the University of Washington, is one of the top research universities in the U.S. Then I thought that this exchange program would give me a lot of great opportunities and decided to study abroad at the University of Washington. Indeed, this experience turned out to be much more than I expected to be. After this experience, I became interested in doing research in the academic and enthusiastic about improving the graduate school education system in Japan. 留学したいと決意したのは、修士課程1年の夏のころでした。私は、将来医学系の分野にたずさわりたいと考えていましたので、製薬会社への就職を希望していました。しかし、それまでの授業や研究からは、医学系の知識を得る機会はありませんでした。その頃偶然、学科の掲示板で交換留学の公募を見つけました。その時、この交換留学制度を利用すれば、自分の学びたい医学系の研究や知識などが得られるのではないかと思いました。協定校の一つであるUniversity of Washingtonは、医学・生物学系分野で全米でもトップクラスと聞いていましたので、これは多くの意味で自分にプラスになるだろうと思い留学を決意しました。この留学の結果、私は企業に就職するよりも大学のような教育研究機関で医学系の研究を行い、さらに日本の大学の教育制度の改善に携わりたいと思いました。
After spending more than a year in the U.S., I have become aware of many advantages of the graduate school education and research systems in the U.S. Some of the advantages of education systems are intensive courses, attitude of faculty members and students toward the education, and the environment where they can always discuss about not only science but also education. Through courses in the graduate program, I learned essential skills as a scientist such as broad range of scientific knowledge, critical reading and logical thinking. In addition to its education system, the research environment was very stimulating. There were a lot of collaborations with other labs and there were also a lot of seminars to learn about research done by scientists all over the world and increase my scientific knowledge. Because the environment like this was very different from the one I had had in Japan, I had a very hard time to get used to it. At the same time, I realized that my attitude to the education and research had been very passive. On the other hand, I also realized my strengths. For example, I thought that my experimental skills were strong. One of the great achievements through this experience was that I realized my strengths and weaknesses that I had not noticed. まず、こちらの大学院の教育制度・研究環境は非常にすばらしいものでした。教育の面では、授業内容の充実さ、教授と学生の教育に対する姿勢、両者が気軽に話し合える関係があげられます。大学院の授業では、将来科学者になるための幅広い知識、論理的に考える力、一人で研究を行うために必要な力などを学ぶことができました。研究環境においては、他の研究室との共同研究がさかんであったり、セミナーなどを通して多くの研究者の研究を聞き知識を増やすことができたりと、非常に刺激のある環境でした。このような環境は、それまで私が受けた教育や研究体制とは非常に異なるものでしたので、最初は非常にとまどいましたし、自分の無知さを実感しました。それまでの自分の学習に対する姿勢がいかに受身的であったかなどに気づくことができました。このように自分の弱みを実感する一方で、強みを実感することもできました。例えば、日本人ならではの実験に対する几帳面さや極め細やかさは、こちらにきても十分通用することに気づきました。今回の留学で得られた大きな収穫の一つは、今まで気づいていなかった自分の強み・弱みを知ることができたことです。
In terms of language, I felt stressed a lot because I came to the country where people speak totally different language from my native language. During the courses, I had to concentrate on understanding people and expressing my opinions. I was exhausted when the day was over. I felt stressed a lot when I couldn’t understand people and expressed myself very well. But I tried my best because I decided to come to this country to learn something. Here I learned one thing. If I show the positive attitude that I want to understand them or want them to understand me, people were happy to help me and try to understand me. 語学面に関しては、もちろん母国語と違う国に来ているということでストレスを感じたこともたくさんありました。授業では、相手の言っていることを聞きのがさないようにするだけでなく、自分の意見を述べなければなりません。頭、耳、口全てを最大限に使わなければならないため、一日が終わると体力的にも精神的にもへとへとになりました。話が理解できなかったりうまく表現できなかったりするときもあり、ストレスを感じることもありました。しかし、他国に留学しようと決めたのは自分の意思だし、自分にプラスになるのだからと、負けずにがんばりました。ここで学んだことは、いくら人のことが理解できなかったり、思うように自分の意見を表現できなくても、理解しようとする姿勢があるとみんな親切に教えてくれますし、こちらのことも理解しようとしてくれます。「その単語ってどういう意味？」、「もう一回ゆっくり話してくれる？」、「私のいってること意味通じてる？」などと聞いてみると、みんな親切に答えてくれます。
Concerning life style, I could easily adapt myself to the life style there and did not feel any big cultural differences. That is because of the city of Seattle. In Seattle, there are a lot of Asian people including Japanese and I could easily get Asian foods. Seattle is called as the “Emerald city”, which is surrounded with natural greens and lakes. I could enjoy hiking, fishing and skiing. In addition, I had a very good time going to the Mariner’s game where Ichiro plays. I started to dance the Latin dance, salsa and I am now very into it. 生活面では、それほど苦労したことはありませんでしたし、大きなカルチャーショックになったこともありませんでした。それは、シアトルという街だったからだと思います。シアトルは、日本人も含めたアジア人の人口が多いので、日本料理やアジア料理のお店がたくさんあります。シアトルはエメラルドシティといわれているように、緑と湖に囲まれた美しい街です。ハイキング、魚釣り、スキーなど楽しむこともできました。また、イチローがいるマリナーズの試合を見に行ったりすることもできました。個人的には、ラテンダンスのサルサをシアトルに来て始め、今ではそのとりこになっています。
I had a wonderful experience in a lot of means. The reason that I learned much more than I expected is because I came to the different environment. By putting myself in this new environment, I could see myself from a different point of view and have a new way of thinking. After this experience, I decided to join to the graduate program in the U.S., learn more in the different education system and continue research in this stimulating research environment. In the future, by taking advantage of this experience, I hope to continue research as scientist and improve the graduate education system in Japan. 以上のように、今回の留学体験で私は非常にすばらしい経験をすることができました。期待以上のことを学ぶことができたのは、それまでとは異なる環境に来たからだと思います。このような環境に自分を置くことにより、新しい視点から物事を見ることができ、新たな目標を見つけることができました。それは、アメリカの大学院に入りなおし、異なる教育制度で学び、すばらしい研究機関で研究を行う力を身につけ､将来日本の大学院の教育・研究体制の改善に携わることができたらという目標です。この留学体験記が、みなさんのお役に立てればと期待しています。
