Never forget such a strong motivation !	ハングリーな精神を忘れずに !
This summer, I participated in an English language summer program for students majoring in science and engineering, entered University of California, Santa Barbara, and did a homestay for 4 weeks. This program washeld as a part of the class ‘English for Engineering ’ in graduate school.	私は大学院の授業「工学英語」の一環として行われている「理工系大学院生のための夏期米国研修」に参加し、アメリカのカリフォルニア大学サンタバーバラ校に入学して現地で４週間ホームステイ滞在してきました。
Because this program seemed to be useful for my future studies and I have hoped to study abroad in my specialty ever since I entered college, I decided to participate in it.	海外に行った経験は無かったのですが、大学に入った頃から「将来、留学して海外で専門の勉強できたらいいな」と漠然と思っており、また今回のプログラムが「理系大学院生のための夏期研修」ということで単なる語学留学ではなく今後役立ちそうだなと思ったことから参加することにしました。
There were 24 students who participated in this program. Mainly, they were graduate students in the department of engineering. We were assigned to two classes.My teacher, Paul, was very gentle and kind and his English was easy to understand. The class was mainly about how to prepare presentations of scientific research. Also the contents of the text book were mainly about how to construct presentation and phrases particular to academic papers. The final was a 20 minute presentation on each student’s research topic, so the class progressed with that goal in mind. Every week, we read science news, did a 5-15 minute presentation, and submitted an outline or summary.Whenever we submitted the outlines, Paul stayed up all night and corrected them. His work was very thorough !	本プログラムに参加したのは主に工学研究科の院生のほか、基礎工学部からの参加者など24人でした。授業は2クラスに分けられ、私のクラスの先生はPaulという男性でした。Paulの英語は分かりやすく、とても紳士的で優しくていい先生だなとすぐに思いました。授業は理系の学生が研究発表などのプレゼンテーションを行う際に役立つコンテンツを中心としたもので、テキストの内容もプレゼンの構成の仕方や、学術論文特有の文章表現を中心としたものでした。最終的な課題として、各人の研究テーマあるいは学術論文について1人20分程度全員が発表を行うことになっていたので、授業はそのファイナルプレゼンテーションを目標として進められました。具体的には毎週1回、サイエンスニュースを読んでそれを基に5～15分程度のプレゼンを行い、そのアウトラインや概要の提出が課せられました。そして提出するとPaulはいつも徹夜で(!?)皆の分を添削してくれ、ほんとうに丁寧に見てくれました。
Although we were taught how to make outlines many times in class, our outlines wereinsufficient, so our teacher had us practice creating outlines in class. I thought it was impossible to read two pages of science news and complete an outline in such a short time, but everyone managed to finish. It was a good experience and I now have confidence that I can read a considerable volume in a short time.	アウトラインの作成については授業で何回も説明してもらっていましたが、皆の出来が不十分であったため、実際に練習として授業中の短時間で2ページもあるサイエンスニュースを読んでその場で作成することになりました。「そんな短時間でムリじゃないか」と思いましたが、なんとか全員でアウトラインを完成することができました。この時の練習では、やればこれだけの短時間で相当量の内容を読めるんだという自信を持つことができていい経験だったと思います。
The final presentations were carried out for three days, four students in a day. Because there were various students who were majoring in various fields, it was very difficult to understand the presentations whose fields were different from mine. However, everybody tried to understand other students' presentations and discussed actively. We graduate students have had many opportunity to carry out presentations. We will be able to make use of what we mastered in this program in the future.	最終プレゼンは毎日4人ずつ3日間行われました。工学系の学生ばかりと言っても、自分のような生物系の人もいれば機械系、物理系の人もいて専門分野は多岐に渡っているため、全く違う分野を専攻する人の発表内容を理解するのは難しかったです。そんな中でも、皆自分と異なる専門領域の発表者に対しても質問をしたりして、積極的な場になっていたことは確かだと思います。院生になってプレゼンする機会が増えてきましたが、ここでの授業で得たことは今後の研究発表やプレゼンをする際に役立てることができると思いました。
In this program, the most memorable thing was the homestay. There were three people in my host family, Steve, Marie, and six-year-old Emma. On weekdays, I came home after class and helped with dinner preparationsand was able to spend about three hours with my host family every day. I enjoyed talking with Marie, whose parents are Japanese and Chinese, while drinking green tea after dinner. It helped me improve my English skill. At first we talked about the difference in eating habits, but gradually talked about deeper themes such as the presidential election and social customs.	さてさて私が今回の留学で一番印象に残ったこと、ホームステイについて書きたいと思います。私の受け入れてもらったホストファミリーはSteveとMarie、6歳のEmmaの3人家族でした。平日は授業が終わって夕食までに家に帰れるので、夕食を作るのを手伝ったりして、毎日食事の時間と合わせて2～3時間くらい家族と一緒に過ごしました。またMarieは日本人と中国人を両親にもつ日系人で、毎日食後に2人で緑茶を飲みながら色々な話をして楽しむことができ、非常に英語の勉強にもなりました。最初の頃は食習慣の違いなどが話題の中心でしたが、街で見たアンチブッシュデモの話から始まって両国の政治の話をしたりして、だんだん深い内容の話もできるようになってきました。
On the last night before I returned to Japan, I told my host family what I had felt while with staying them. I thought it was wonderful that they have time to relax after dinner, in comparison with Japanese people. I was able to talk to them about religion, which I had not had a chance to ask about before. We talked about not only religion, but also about value systemsas well.	日本に帰る前日の夜、私はホストファミリーと一緒に暮らしてきた中で感じたことを伝えました。日本に比べてあくせくした感じがなく、夕食後に毎日のんびりとくつろげるその時間はほんとうに素晴らしいと思いました。そして、それまで気になっていてなかなか聞けなかった宗教のことも最後に聞くことができました。ただ「宗教」について聞けただけでなく、それと共にどういう価値観を持っているのかということも今まで以上にお互いに話すことができてとてもよかったと思いました。

I had experienced many things in four weeks. It was very difficult for me to communicate what I wanted to say using my poor English, and I was vexed by my failures everyday, but my gladdest thing was that they tried to understand what I said and talk with me. I felt that communication was not only speaking English well, and also I keenly realized that communication couldn’t exist unless I could reach a level where I understood the speaker and had my own thoughts about the topics.	4週間の中でさまざまなことがありましたが、自分の拙い英語で言いたいことを言葉にして伝えることは非常に難しく、それがうまく出来なくてじれったく感じることの連続でした。しかし、そこで私の伝えようとすることを頑張って理解して、そして話そうとしてくれたことが一番うれしく感じたことです。コミュニケーションをとるということは、英語をうまく話すだけでは決してないということを実感しました。それと同時にコミュニケーションというのは、相手の話を理解できるレベルに自分がいて、さらにその事に対して問題意識を持って自分なりの考えを持っていないとできないのだということも痛感しました。
I have many things I want to write about: meeting with native students, weekend traveling, etc. Because these experiences gave me new viewpoints and ways of thinking, the 4 weeks were very beneficial. The more we take advantage of opportunities, the more things we can experience. Even in Japan, I will never forget such a strong motivation and will put this experience to good use.	現地の学生と過ごしたことや週末の旅行など他にも書きたいことは色々とありますが、それら全ての体験を通して今までと違った新しい視点や考え方を持つことができたので充実した4週間であったと思います。積極的に自分から機会を求めて行動するとそれだけ得られるものも多いと思うので、日本においてもハングリーな精神を忘れず今回の経験を活かしていきたいと思います。
