Do not feel nervous !	肩肘を張らずに !
* Motivation	* 動機
Once I finished job hunting and earned enough credits to graduate, I had some free time in my schedule. When I begin work as an engineer next year, I expect to have even less time to study English than now, even though English ability is more important to have in the work world. While I was taking the class "English for Engineering 2", the teacher introduced this program to us. I grew interested in this program because through it, I would have the chance to travel to America and experience many things not possible on a normal trip.	就職活動も終わり、単位もそろい、後は修士論文だけとなったことでまとまった時間が出来たこと。来年から社会人となり、勉強に取れるまとまった時間が取れなくなるのに対して、英語力は今より更に求められる環境になりそうだから。工学英語2を取得したときに、先生に「夏季語学研修」があると紹介を受け、興味を持ったこと。このプログラムを利用すると、気軽にアメリカに行けて、普通に旅行するのとは違う体験が出来る気がしたから。
* Class	* 授業
In the morning, we had classescalled "English for Engineering", similar to an English class in high school, and "Lecture of Nanoscience and Technology", similar to a lecture at a university. In classes of twelve to thirteen people, we mainly learned about the differences inthe cultures ofAmerica and Japanand how to give a presentation in English. Some of my classmates were confused due to the differences between classes inAmerica and Japan, but I enjoyed it. Sometimes I was cautioned by the teacher because I was talking to Japanese classmates in Japanese. It was fun to discuss the cultural differences between America and Japan, but I was also glad to learn how to give a presentation in English. I think that this is an essential skill for students to have because they will have many opportunities to make English presentations at international academic meetings. The lecture covered a broad range of fields, from biological engineering to materials and information engineering. The lectures on topics outside my major were hard for me to understand, but most teachers made it easier for students to understand by increasing introductory material, and I did fine.	午前中はEnglish for Engineeringという高校の英語みたいな授業とLecture of Nanoscience and Technologyという大学の講義みたいな授業がありました。12～13人1クラスで、アメリカと日本の文化の違いやプレゼンテーションの仕方を中心に学びました。日本の授業体系とは異なるので、戸惑う人もいたみたいですが私は楽しかったです。教室は日本人だらけなので、日本語でつい話してしまい、よく先生に怒られました。文化の違いを討論することももちろん楽しかったのですが、プレゼンテーションのいろはを詳細に教えてもらえたのは嬉しかったです。これから国際学会など、英語で発表する機会の増える学生には必須のスキルと思われるからです。Lectureは生物系から材料・情報工学に至るまで幅広い分野の授業でした。専門以外の授業になると難しく、意味をとるのも大変でしたが、たいていの先生がIntroductionを増やすなど理解がしやすいようにしてくださり、楽しかったです。

* Field Trip	* 実地見学
In the afternoon, we went on Field Trips around the university. In visiting to UW laboratory, I met a student researching a topic similar to mine, and we discussed our research. I brushed up my English skills using technical termsduring this discussion. Besides this discussion, we enjoyed playing ping-pong, drinking coffee, and relaxing with UW students. The field trip to the UW laboratory was the most fun part of the program for me.	午後は研究室見学と施設などを見学する時間でした。研究室見学は、UWの学生が何を研究しているのかを知ることが出来、自分の研究テーマと近い学生を発見できたり、ディスカッションをしたりしました。専門用語を多用した会話などは、この時間にブラッシュアップすることが出来ました。それ以外は卓球をしたり、コーヒーを飲んだりと比較的のんびりした時間をすごしました。私は今回の夏期語学研修で、研究室見学の時間が一番楽しかったです。
* Outside of Class	* 授業外の出来事
After class, almost all of the students, including me, went out to the city to play.We visited many places like Pike Place Market, the space needle, Starbucks 1st Cafe, and Broadway to enjoy shopping, sightseeing, and drinking. As part of this program, we went to Safeco Field to watch a Mariners’ Game. Exactly the day we went, Ichiro made his memorable 50th hit. The Japanese students studying at UW were very kind to us and took us to many places when they had the time. One Sunday, we went to Microsoft Co. Ltd.; it is a unbelievable big "park"!! As I gazed at the buildings, I thought to myself how Windows, which we use every day, was created here.During time off, every student had funin their own way. Sometime I wished I was male, sometime I was glad to be female.	授業が終わると、たいていの学生が町に繰り出して遊んでいました。ご多分に漏れず、私もその一人でした。pike place market, space needle, Starbucks 1st Cafe, Broadwayなど、ガイドブックに載っていそうなところは殆どすべて回りました。また授業の一環として(?)、MarinersのSafeco Fieldに野球観戦にいったりもしました。丁度私たちが野球観戦をした日に、イチローは月間50本安打という記念すべきヒットを見せてくれました。 UWに留学している日本人学生にも、大変良くしていただきました。折を見てはいろいろなところに連れて行っていただきました。一番の思い出は、Microsoft本社に乗り込んだことです。Microsoftは「キャンパス」と言われる広大な敷地を保有すると聞いていましたが、本当に社内は「公園」でした。いつも使っているWindowsがここで出来るのか～と建物を眺めていました。 Offtimeでは、それぞれの人がそれぞれの楽しみ方をしたようです。男だったらよかったのに、と思うこともありましたし、女でよかった、と思うこともありました。
* Trip to Canada	* カナダへの出国
This year, the summer program was held at two schools, UW and UCSB (University of California, Santa Barbara). I might say UW is better than UCSB, because the state of Washington is located near the borderline of US-Canada and we could easily take tripstoCanada. I had lived in Japan, an island nation, for long time, so I was surprised to cross the borderline by road. I visited two countries in a short time and found slight differences between the two countries, which was interesting to me.	夏季留学プログラムは、今年はUWとUCSBの2校でした。UWがUCSBに対して有利だと言い切れる点があるとすれば、ワシントン州はカナダとの国境近くに存在し、カナダへの入出国が非常に簡単に出来るということでしょう。日本という島国に暮らしている私たちは、国境を越えるには飛行機に乗らねばなりません。しかしアメリカ-Canada間は陸路で国境を越えることが出来ます。このことが予想以上に感動をもたらしました。また、短期間に2国を回れることによって、同じ英語圏にも違いを見出すことが出来たのも興味深かったです
* For people who plan to join this program	* これから参加しようと思う人へ
Please do not feel nervous. Please feel free to join this program if you want to study English or you want some excitement in your everyday life. Even if you come without anything,this program will make your stay inSeattle feel comfortable. When you join this program, please enjoy the differences, for instance, the differencesin behavior between Japan and theUS and the diversity of the students and staff. The most important thing is to brush-up your English skills and study your majorwhile having fun. I think this program allows you to do that.	肩肘を張らないで下さい。英語を勉強したいな～、と思ったら、気軽に参加して下さい。何か日常に刺激が欲しいと思ったら、気軽に参加して下さい。貴方が身一つで来ても受け入れてくれるくらい、プログラムは適確かつSeattleは快適です。参加したら、違いを楽しんでください。日本とアメリカは、1ヶ月いるだけで様々な違いが見えてきます。また参加者もアメリカのスタッフも色々な考え方の人がいます。いちいち負担に思っていると、キリがありません。一番大切なことは、貴方が楽しみながら英語と専門知識を向上させることです。私は、その素地はこのプログラム内に含まれていると思います。
