Precious Memory	大切な思い出
After finishing my first year in the Masters course, I took a year off and I went to Pacific Gateway International College, in Brisbane, Australia, to study English for 7 months.	僕は、大学院1年生終了後、1年間休学をとり、オーストラリアの Brisbane にある Pacific Gateway International College に7ヶ月間語学留学しました。
The main purpose was to improve my poor English skills, to make friends from other countries, and to enhance myself by learning things through various experiences in a different country. Since I went to study English, not to work towards my major, what I did may not be seen as essential for my future, but I had a strong hope that once I go there, having taken a year off, I' would surely learn things that will make it meaningful.	メインの目的は乏しい英語力の向上はもちろん、他の国の友達を作る、外国でいろいろな経験を通じて学び、成長することでした。語学留学ということで、自分の専攻分野について勉強しにいくわけでもなく、将来的に見て特別必要かと言われれば、そうではなかったわけですが、ただ、僕の中で「1年間休学をとっていくからには、それに取ってかわる以上の何かを必ず得て帰る」という意志はありました。
To choose the school to go to I went to some exhibitions for studying abroad, and I used free consulting. My university English teacher also gave me some advice, and after considering carefully, I finally chose Pacific Gateway International College in Brisbane, because the college had a really strict "English Only" policy and provided TOEIC testing every fourth week. The college and the area 2 blocks around the college is assigned as an "English Only" zone, and if a teacher finds a student speaking in a language other than English the student gets a yellow card. Moreover, if one accumulates three yellow cards, without any exceptions, s/he is expelled from school.	学校選びには、留学エージェントが開催する留学説明会に何度か足を運んだり、無料コンサルティングを利用したり、大学の英語科担当の先生の助言を頂いたりもし、熟考した上で最終的に Pacific Gateway International College の Brisbane 校に決めました。決めた理由は、他のカレッジとは異なり、かなり厳しい English Only Policy をもっていたこと、4週間ごとに1回TOEICテストを受験できることでした。学校内および学校を含む2ブロックが English Only Zone として指定されており、この中で英語以外の言葉でしゃべっているところを発見されると、イエローカード、そしてイエローカードを3枚ためると冗談ぬきで退学、といったルールでした。
On the first day there my school life got started after I signed a consent form for their "English Only" policy. The results of a check test placed me into the second lowest level, but it was difficult to listen and understand what other students or teachers were saying. But it didn’t last long, and I made many friends soon, as well as I became able to understand what the teachers were saying. Owing to the "English Only" policy, students didn’t tend to gather with those of the same nationality, and many of them really wanted to study English, so I was usually having conversations in English even with Japanese friends outside of the “English Only Zone. From what I heard, this doesn’t happen in other colleges, so I was very satisfied with my college. Moreover, it has many kinds of activities.	入学初日、English Only Policy への同意をもとめる書類にサインをし、学校生活が始まりました。チェックテストの結果、下から2番目のレベルでのスタートでしたが、それでも、先生および周りの生徒がしゃべっている言葉を聞き取るのに苦労しました。でも、それは最初のうちだけで、時間が経つにつれ、友達もたくさんでき、先生がしゃべっている内容も大方わかるようになりました。学校の English Only Policy のおかげで、同じ国籍同士で固まることもなく、英語を本気で勉強しに来た人が多く、English Only Zone 外で日本人同士でもたいてい英語で会話をしていました。他のカレッジでは、話を聞く限り、このようにはならないので、学校にはかなり満足していました。また、Pacific Gateway は厳しいだけではなく、Activity なんかも充実していました。
In addition to studying, I joined volunteer work some times. One was to visit a nursing house or a school for disabled children and help them with something. Another was to make things which children can play with, such as paper crafts. In Australia, people can get some financial assistant from the government if they do volunteer work more than twice a week. Volunteer workers consist of students, people who have their regular job, and people who don’t seem rich. Anyway everyone was kind and interesting. I found out some big difference between Japan and Australia through conversations, so it was also a very good experience for me. For example, Australians have a strong sprit of equality. Compared to Japan, in Australia there is a well arranged environment in which foreigners or disabled people can work. Also when someone is in trouble, they tend to help each other, and it’s not rare that people donate more than \10,000. I had more opportunities to learn, and my sense of value changed.	あと、学校での勉強以外に、ボランティアワークに何回か参加しました。内容は、老人ホームや障害をもつ子供たちの学校に行き、援助する、別のものは、子供たちが遊べるペーパークラフトやちょっとしたおもちゃを作るというものでした。オーストラリアでは、ボランティアワークを週に2日以上することにより、政府から援助金をもらうことができるシステムがあります。ボランティアワーカーの中には、大学生、普段の仕事とボランティアを平行してやっている人や、若干裕福ではなさそうな人など、いろいろな人がいましたが、みんな親切で楽しい人でした。普段の会話の中にも、日本とオーストラリアで大きく異なる点を発見できたりして、いい経験になりました。たとえば、オーストラリアでは平等精神が強く、外国人や障害を持った人たちが働ける環境が日本と比べて断然整っている、また、困ったことがあったらみんなで助け合うという気持ちが非常に強く、募金で1人数万円も寄付することもめずらしくなかったりします。他にもいろいろなことを学ぶ機会があって、自分の価値観が変わりました。
At the moment I decided to study abroad, I was not sure whether it was worth bearing the loss caused by taking a year off. But now after coming back, I think that studying abroad was really good for me. I’ve improved my English more than I expected, I met many friends there, and I made lots of good and precious memories. I also experienced and found a lot through exploring a different culture. Obviously I’ve learned more than the loss caused by taking a year off. So what I'd like to say is "If you are thinking about it, please act it out!" It's certain that good results will come out of it.	この留学を決めた時点では、本当に1年休学して留学する価値があるのかということに関して、半信半疑なところもあったのですが、帰ってきた今思うことは、留学してきて確実に良かったということです。英語力は期待していた以上に伸び、友達ができ、たくさんの楽しい大切な思い出が出来ました。そして、文化の違いを通じていろいろな体験・発見をできたこと。どう考えても1年間休学したことによる代償以上のものを得られたと思います。ですので、迷っているのであれば、実行してみてください。必ずいい結果が返ってきます。
