UCSB summer extension !	UCSB夏期語学研修に参加して !
Why I decided to participate in this program I participated in an English language summer program at University of California, Santa Barbara for 4weeks from 16th August. This is conducted as a part of the class ‘English for Engineering’ in graduate school. Though I’m an undergraduate student, I could participate in this program because I passed the entrance examination of the graduate school earlier than usually. I decided to participate in this program because the aim of this is to develop the ability in English which is necessary as student in the science and engineering majors and I thought it must pay dividends. Also, I wanted to experience the campus life in the U.S. once.	参加の動機 8月16日から4週間、カリフォルニア大学サンタバーバラ校での夏期語学研修に参加しました。これは、大学院の授業「工学英語」の一環として行われているものです。私は基礎工学部の学部生ですが、大学院の推薦入試を受け早い時期に合格が決まっていたため、参加させていただきました。参加したのは、「理系の学生として必要な英語の力をつける」ことを目的としたプログラムであったため、今後役に立ちそうだと思ったためです。また、アメリカ大学生活を一度体験してみたいと思っていたことも、参加の動機のひとつです。

About Santa Barbara Santa Barbara is the calm resort spot at the seaside. I think the environment is best because weather and security is really good there. UCSB has a reservoir of strength and energy. For example, department of Material is at the top in the U.S. The campus is wide and comfortable, which made me relaxed. It has the beach in the campus. The facility on the campus was good enough to spend,	サンタバーバラについて　サンタバーバラは穏やかな海辺のリゾート地で、気候も治安も非常によく、環境は最高であったと思います。UCSBはMaterial部門は全米１位という勢いのある大学で、大きなキャンパスはきれいで気持ちがよく、リラックスできました。また、大学内にビーチがあり、設備も整っていました。
Class We had class from Monday to Friday. We had a program from 9 to 4 from Monday to Thursday. On Friday, we had a class only in the morning. However, we don’t sit in the class room all the time. There was a time called ‘Independent study’, which we used PC mainly, and a lot of tours. 20 students took part in this program. Because it was too many to take classes all together, we were divided into 2 classes. My teacher was man, whose name is Randy. He was funny and often said American jokes. He encouraged us to speak up in class without hesitating. In the class, we learnedvocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, the way to summarize the journal well or to make a good presentation, and so on, We chose and summarized one article from the science news every week and made a presentation in front of the class. We submitted them to the teacher or have corrected them by smarthinking (internet service on the internet), and rewrote them. When we made presentations, we decided the role and evaluated one another. In the class, we could get a lot of tips concerned the way to study efficiently and good information by which would help us after we came back to Japan. I think this was really useful for us. Although we had a lot of assignments, I think I could improve my English ability by it.	学校生活　授業は月曜～金曜で、月～木は９時から４時、金曜は午前中でした。しかし、ずっと教室で講義を受けていた訳ではなく、主にPCを使うIndependent Studyや、数多くのTourが組まれていました。参加人数が20人と多かったため、クラスは2つに分けられました。私のクラスの先生はRandyという男性の先生でした。Randyはアメリカンジョークを飛ばす楽しい先生で、常に私たちがクラスに於いて積極的に発言するよう雰囲気を作ってくれました。クラスでは、語彙、発音、文法や、効果的な要約やプレゼンの行い方など様々な勉強をしました。毎週科学系の雑誌から記事を選んで要約し、クラスの前でプレゼンを行いました。要約は、先生に提出したりやオンラインの添削サービスを利用して添削してもらい、書き直しをしました。プレゼンの際は、クラスで役割を決めてお互いに評価しあいました。授業では、語学研修期間だけでなく、その後の英語学習においても役立つような勉強方法や資料を数多く得ることができ、非常に有益であったと思います。宿題はかなり多かったですが、そのおかげで力を付けることができたと思います。
Tour and presentation On the tour, we looked around the facilities on campus or institution near the university, We always studied beforehand. Also, we encouraged to ask questions actively. We had an opportunity to meet Prof. Shuji Nakamura, who is the inventor of blue LED. We had stimulating conversation. We were to make 15 minutes presentations in front of the class on the last week about our own research. So, we prepared for it on parallel with the usual task. The last presentations were held divided in 2days. I found it very difficult how to attract the audience and made them understood.I think it was great experience.	Tour とプレゼンテーション　Tourでは、大学内の研究施設や大学近郊の施設を見学しました。必ず事前に下調べを行い、積極的に質問をすることが求められました。青色発光ダイオード発明者の中村教授にお会いする時間もあり、刺激を受けることができました。最終週に自分の研究についての15分程度のプレゼンテーションがあり、それに向けての準備も平行して行いました。プレゼンテーションは2日間に分けて行われました。いかに人を引きつけ、バックグラウンドのない人にも理解できるプレゼンテーションを行うかに苦労しましたが、とてもよい練習になりました。
Home stay My host family was consisted of 3 people; Lawrence, Clee, whose are couple, and Felicia, who is their daughter, a high school student. From home, I went to school by bus. They are all very cheerful and kind. After I came home, I always talked with them a lot while I had a dinner or watched TV. I also help Felicia with her assignments and played game with them. On the weekend, Lawrence took us to the beach. I had a great time with them. Talking with the members of host family was really good practice of English conversations. Furthermore, it was a precious experience for me to have one more family outside Japan.	ホームステイ私のホストファミリーは、Laurence、Clee夫婦と、高校生のFeliciaの3人でした。学校へはバスで通学していました。ホストファミリーは皆とても楽しい人たちで、親切でした。学校から帰ると、夕食を食べたりテレビを見たりしながらたくさん会話をしました。Feliciaの宿題を手伝ったり、一緒にゲームをしたりもしました。週末にはLaurenceがビーチへ連れて行ってくれたこともあり、とても楽しい時間を過ごしました。ホストファミリーとの会話は、本当によい英会話の練習になったと思います。それだけでなく、国籍を超えたもう一つの家族を持つことができ、かけがえのない経験となりました。

After class or on the weekend In this program, there was a system called ‘conversation partner’. The graduate students of UCSB helped us through the program. One conversation partner took charge 4-5 students. We often had lunch together and enjoyed talking. I asked one conversation partner whose research area is close to mine to look around the laboratory I was interested in. They showed us around downtown, took us to the Bar, and much more. We had a conversation about various topics as coeval students, so it was great time to practice English and international exchange. On the weekend and after class, I went on a trip or go shopping to downtown, and had a good time. It was not only a great chance to practice talking English, but wonderful memory.	課外活動このプログラムには、Conversation partnerという制度があり、現地の大学院生がいろいろな世話をしてくれました。4～5人に一人のConversation partnerが付き、お昼ご飯を一緒に食べたりして会話を楽しみました。私は、研究分野が近いConversation partnerに頼んで、興味のある研究室を見学させてもらいました。他にも、downtownを案内してもらったり、Barに連れて行ってもらったり、同年代どうし様々なトピックで会話をして、非常によい英語の練習と国際交流になったと思います。週末や放課後は旅行へ行ったりダウンタウンへ繰り出したりと、本当に楽しく過ごしました。英語を練習する良い機会になり、同時にいい思い出作りにもなりました。
Conclusion What I felt most strongly through this program is that the most important thing is to try anything you want. You can decide the plan freely in this UCSB program, so you can do what you’d really like to do. In other words, the efficiency of the program for you depends on you. If you try anything without hesitating, your world would be getting wider and wider. Also, I discovered many differences between the U.S. and Japan by knowing the university and society of the U.S. I feel I could improve my ability of speaking English best of all now. I’d like to apply this experience from now on.	終わりに今回の語学研修を通して感じたことは、何事も「やってみる」ことが大切だということです。ＵＣＳＢのプログラムは、自分で自由にプランを決められるものとなっているので、本当に自分がやりたい事をすることができます。他の言い方をすれば、自分次第で濃さが変わってくるということです。しり込みせずにトライしてみることで、自分の世界はどんどん広がっていきます。また、アメリカの大学や社会を体験することで、様々な違いを発見しました。英語については、リスニング・スピーキングを中心に今力がついたように感じています。今回の経験を、これから先の人生において生かしていきたいと思います。
